Nice Places around USC: Eating


Some restaurants we thought they were worth mentioned here.

 
Thai Restaurants get 10% discount at ...


Thai restaurant could be found scattered all around LA, mainly on Hollywood Blvd. There are also a few in Alhambra, north Hollywood, and Sunset Blvd.

  1. P' Yai' -- decent, closest from freeway, always opens even Sunday after 3pm, specialized in Northeastern Thai style, but always packed, bad restroom.
  2. Jitlada Thai Restaurant map -- excellente, variety and creative food, quite expensive, good restaurant, southern-style.
  3. Siam Sunset map (Mon-Sat 6am-6pm, Sun 6am-4pm) -- great food, one of the best Thai restaurants in town. But not for 7pm-dinner people.
  4. Siam Express -- cheap, high volume, Kao-Keang (ready-to-eat) style, can choose any food you want to sit back. Have fried banana and other deserts (not that good, though). On Valley Blvd, several blocks on your left when you go there from 99 Ranch Market.
  5. Noodle World map -- inter disciplinary Chinese and Thai. Great Noodles and Thai icing desert.
  6. Noodle Planet Inc map -- same as noodles, same owner as Siam Express and Noodle World.
  7. Pailin Thai Cuisine map -- great food, very hard to park, almost always closed :-P
  8. Suantarn -- big restaurant, looks neat, good food, really annoying singers.
  9. Sa-narm-Luang -- like noodle garden in BKK but not as good, slow response waitresses, always open late at night.
  10. Rod-Ded -- a lot of MFG, but delicious, close early, also hard to park (near Pailin).
  11. Thai Trio -- in UV, not expensive, really good, nice people, own by THSA/USC alumni

Chinese Restaurants


A lot of Chinese food is in Alhambra, Monteray Park, and China Town.

  1. Empress Pavilion Restaurant map -- the nearest Dim Sum, in Bamboo plaza China Town, have 2 Japanese gift shops downstairs.
  2. Ocean Star Seafood Restaurant map -- Dim Sum in Monterey Park (Alhambra) area, from 10 east exit Atlantic Ave.
  3. Din Tai Fung Dumpling House map -- Taiwanese dumpling place, only have 4 branches around the world, amazingly good, 30 mins from USC, exit 10 east at Baldwin north, 1108 south Baldwin Ave (626) 574-7068.
  4. Old Country Cafe map -- Less than $5 per plate and refillable. What more do you want ?
  5. Lake Spring Cuisine map -- Exotic chinese food, not just some simple chow mein or noodle. quite expensive.
  6. Atlantic Cafe -- Very good and cheap oily chicken rice "Khaw~-mun-Kai".

European & American Restaurants


There're so many places that serves great European dishes around LA.

  1. The Original Pantry Cafe map -- Busy casual steak house that never close for more than 70 years
    • Price Dinner $15-20
    • What to Order New York Steak
    • Tips Good portion of food. Can ask the waiter to toast the bread for you.
    • Direction 10 mins from USC. Take Figueroa heading downtown. The restaurant is on the 9th and Figueroa corner.

  2. Hot Wing Cafe map -- Really spicy Buffalo wing
    • Price 50 pieces for $20, of course you could buy less pieces
    • What to Order Hot Wing (Buffalo wing)
    • Tips Very good for a big party

  3. Julienne link | map -- Sophisticated Southern French Bistro in San Marino, just south of South Pasadena
    • Price Lunch $20-30
    • What to Order Chicken Apricot Salad, Provencal Ravioli
    • Tips Arrive early. Always packed on weekends. Very good ambient. Seating outside at the patio recommended. Self-operated store offers some of the best provisions in town, including home made jam, pasta, dried food and herb from Southern France.
    • Direction 20 mins from USC. 110 North Exit Fair Oaks, right onto Fair Oaks heading South, left onto Mission heading East for a couple more block, the restaurant is on your left on the North side of Mission.

  4. Dino's Burgers map -- Greek grilled chicken, very cheap, near USC, looks a lot like Mexican food
    • Price Extremely cheap, half chicken with fries and coleslaw for $3
    • What to Order Grilled chicken

  5. Papa Cristos map -- Greek Cafe, good food, have a grocery store inside
    • Price less than $10
    • What to Order Grilled stuffs, warm bread, buglava (not sure about spelling, but it's a desert)

  6. Krispy Kreme link | map[Crenshaw, Burbank] -- The best doughnut in America
    • Price less than $2
    • What to Order the original glazed doughnut
    • Tips They give each guest a free sample, so pick smart
    • Direction see the map for each branch

  7. Figaro Bakery map -- Italian Cafe and Bakery
    • Price $3-6 per piece
    • What to Order Tiramitsu, Fruit Tarts, Cakes
    • Tips Try jam.
    • Direction on Vermont about 2 blacks further from Hollywood Blvd junction

Japanese Restaurants


Mostly the Japanese restaurants are in Torrance county and Little Tokyo area.

  1. Sushi Mac map -- 3rd St near Beverly Center
  2. Ramenya link | map -- The best ramen in town, 11555 w Olympic Blvd, (310) 575-9337.
  3. Little Tokyo map -- A large block containing many Japanese shops and restaurants, 1st and 2nd, San Pedro St. and Central Ave. You can get there using Dash 'F' and continue on Dash 'A'.
  4. Moose Fantasy map -- In Sawtelle Center, near Best Buy Olympic, has great neat Japanese moose cakes.
  5. Food Centers in Mitsuwa -- Each Mitsuwa has great food center.

Korean Restaurants


You can find lots of Korean foods in Korean town.

  1. BCD Tofu House map -- Pretty good Korean food.
  2. Safety Zone map -- Looks like, it's a parking structure but actually there's a restaurant in there. Really cold in Winter that you would wanna take some sweater along but the grilled meat is so good that you should try it. Don't forget that the grilling is gonna make your shirt and hair very stinky by the time you' re done, but again it's really good.

Vietnamese Restaurants


Vietnamese restaurants are scattered all over LA. Mostly in Alhambra area.

  1. Golden Deli Vietnamese map -- Very delicious Vietnamese restaurant in Alhambra around 10 mins from 99 Ranch market.
